Quick Notes
OpenAI killed Sora. The app, the API, the web platform — all gone. The Disney partnership? Dead.
A billion-dollar deal unwound and the true reason is just unknown. This was abrupt.
Six months after Sora launched as the most downloaded app in the Photo & Video category, it's being retired.
The model itself survives inside ChatGPT for paying subscribers, but the standalone product is finished.

But…WHY?!
THEY HAD EVERYTHING, THEN NOTHING
Rumors say that Disney pulled out first when it came to the deal they had with Sora and OpenAI.
On March 24, OpenAI quietly announced that Sora's app, API, and web platform would all be discontinued. No exact shutdown date yet, but the writing's on the wall.
The iOS app that topped the charts in September 2025? Gone. The API that developers had already integrated into production workflows? Gone!
The app took AI video forward, but was also known as a slop machine. Backed by celebrities like Jake Paul, Sora seemed unstoppable when Disney appeared in the game.
However, a few months later it all completely crumbled.
IT WAS TOO EXPENSIVE
The economics were brutal. Turns out they were fatal.
OpenAI was spending millions on keeping Sora active, and after the incredible launch…things just died out.
It was hard to keep the model active, the API and continue to grow especially as the optics in the AI space continue to change.
OpenAI have moved their focuses to personal AI, worldbuilding and coding.
Sadly, this leaves Sora without an open source release, meaning it will eventually completely vanish.
OPEN SOURCE IS THE SOLUTION
To protect ourselves in the future from the loss of AI video models, we need to start focusing on open-source options.
With LTX, their entire model can be run locally on your machine if you have the compute and specs to match it.
This would work without cost, without an internet connection and means that even if everything falls apart, you can continue to create.
If anything, this OpenAI situation has taught us how fast things can completely fall apart.
